Desi and Lucy photoshoots were just so perfect so full of love.

“From the way they did the rhumba together,” said Charlie Morrison, owner of the popular Hollywood nightclub the Mocambo which was frequented by Lucy and Desi, “You’d have thought they were newlyweds.”

Every night Lucy would call Desi. She was doing a picture [Fancy Pants] with Bob Hope. Bob fell off a phony horse. I don’t think he had hit the floor before Lucille was out there. She got into the car and drove straight to Del Mar. They stayed the whole time Bob Hope was incapacitated, which was four to five weeks. And they just loved it. — Marcella Rabwin

Both were temperamental, volatile, and stubborn, and such obstacles and spirited battles only acted as a powerful aphrodisiac, further intensifying their almost overpowering passion. His possesive nature prompted Desi to began calling her “Lucy” — “I never liked ‘Lucille,’ ” said Desi. “That name had been used by other man. ‘Lucy’ was mine alone.”

There’s something in the kind of man you choose, the strength of man you choose. She knew what she was doing when she chose my father. She knew that he was a man who loved women, a ‘Latin Lover’. She always went for people like that, and kind of liked the challenge. It made her feel very womanly to have a guy that is clearly the ‘lover boy’, and ‘lover boy’ falls in love with you. How fabulous that would make you feel. - Lucie Arnaz

When rehearsals for the first episode of The Lucy Show commenced on July 12, Desi presented Lucille with a kiss and a good-luck emblem of a tiny four-leaf clover crafted from antique emerald jade. “It was a fabulous piece of jewelry,” recalls Candy Moore. “But that wasn’t the point. The point was that he adored her to the extent that he was thoughtful enough to give her such a smashing gift. She cried. They had a lot of tenderness and love between them.” Desi climbed a soundstage catwalk and watched Lucy rehearse a scene, prompting him to break into tears. Vivian went to him and the two embraced. “Oh, Desi,” she sobbed, “it isn’t the same, is it?”

Desi Arnaz, however, preffered to view the programme [Here’s Lucy first episode] from a highly personal perspective: “I think the wonderful surprise to everyone is my daughter. […] I knew she was loaded with talent. She has a great sense of rhythm and a wonderful sense of humour - which is obviously inherited. She’s got a lot of her mother in her”.
Desi phoned Lucille after the premiere broadcast. “Honey, regardless of whether they’re our children or not, they were just great. I just wanted you to know how proud I am of the kids - and of you”. Lucille interrupted him and emotionally said: “Stop that, you troublemaker - are you trying to get me to ruin my dress with tears?”
